Casper Bronk

    

Casper Bronk was born 12 Nov 1841 Town of Ephratah.  He was the son of Richard Bronk and Nancy Wemple. Casper died 1923 in Johnstown at the age of 81 years and is buried in the Ferndale Cemetery.

Casper married Lena Christman on 29 Dec 1864 Ephratah. Lena Christman, born Feb 1840 Town of Ephratah, was the daughter of Peter and Mary Christman. (see Johnstown Library's card index for Peter Christman's obit, Newspaper dated 12 Apr 1894).

Casper served as a Private in the 97th Infantry Regiment New York Volunteers, Companies D and F during the Civil War. (National Park Service Soldiers Record). He was discharged on 10 Feb 1863 as a private. (www.itd.nps.gov)

The 97th Infantry Regiment was mustered in 18 Feb 1862 in Boonville, NY under the command of Col. Charles Wheelock. Mustered out on 18 July 1865. Companies D&F were mainly recruited at Salisbury. (New York State Military Museum and Veterans Research Center, www.dmna.state.ny.us)

On 12 Mar 1862 the regiment left Boonville with 928 men. ("History of Herkimer County, New York" by F. W. Beers & Co. 1879).  Their first battle was at Cedar Mountain, VA on 9 Aug 1862 (Union New York Volunteers, www.itd.nps.gov)

The 97th Regiment lost 12 Officers and 169 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded. One officer and 156 Enlisted men died by disease. (Union New York Volunteers, www.itd.nps.gov)

Casper served as vice-commander of the McMartin Post 257 GAR.

1865 census-Fulton County, marriages: 
Brontz(?), Caspar, age 22 married Christman, Lena age 24 on 29 Dec 1864 Ephratah (spellings are as seen in records).

1869-1870 Bronk, Casper is listed in Garoga as proprietor, strawboard paper mill. (Child's Gazetteer, Businesses & Residents of Ephratah 1869-70)

Peter Christman age 60 farmer; 
Mary Christman age 52 wife; 
Henry age 27 son farmer; 
Nathan age 26 son farmer; 
Eli age 22 son; 
Casper Bronk age 28 works on farm; 
Lena Bronk age 31 daughter.

1880 census-Johnstown: 
Casper Bronk age 39 carpenter; 
Lena Bronk age 40 keeping house.

1900 census-Johnstown 1st ward 314 State Street: 
Casper Bronk age 58, born Nov 1841,carpenter;
Lena Bronk age 60, born Feb 1840. Married 36 years.

Casper and Lena Bronk had no children (that i could find).

Casper was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. His will is on file in the Fulton County Building. Obit is on file with Evelyn Frasier, Town of Ephratah Historian.

Richard Bronk, father of Casper, was born 6 Jan 1804 Coxsackie, Greene County, New York. Richard died 21 Aug 1857 (age 53 yrs, 7 mo, 17 days) and is buried in Clipp Hill Cemetery, Town of Johnstown. Richard Bronk married Nancy Wemple. Nancy was born 5 Nov 1802 and was the daughter of John B. Wemple (died 4 July 1816, 47 years old) and Mary Miller (died 30 April 1847, 76 years old). 1860 census-Lassellsville: 
Nancy Bronk age 57, 
Barney age 23, 
Jane age 16, 
Casper age 18, 
Mary Bowler age 7 granddaughter.

1880 census-Ephratah: 
Nancy Bronk age 79 living with her son John R.Bronk

Richard Bronk's will written on 21 May 1857 is on file at the Fulton County Building, Johnstown. Casper is listed as a minor child. Witnesses: Daniel Lassell and Marvin Bronk.

Richard Bronk was the son of Caspar Bronk and Elizabeth de la Vergne Greene of Coxsackie, New York. Elizabeth was wife #1. Caspar Bronk married #2:  Catharine Bogardus. Caspar Bronk, wife #2, and children moved to Town of Ephratah in 1824. (Ephratah Dutch Reformed Church Records 1824, Casper Bronk).
