Remember that when corresponding with town historians, societies and museums to be as specific as possible and limit your requests to one surname or one search.  They are very busy people and have other priorities as well.  Please be considerate of expenses; always include a SASE (or additional postage) and ask if there are research fees or other expenses, offer to reimburse for the cost of copies, etc..

Historians

Important Note:

Though Town, Village and County Historians may themselves have potential genealogical resources or may know where you might locate specific resources, please remember that they are local Historians, and not Genealogists.

Per NYS Arts and Cultural Affairs Law Section 57.13.

"Neither Town Law nor any other statute authorizes a town to make expenditures for the benefit of individuals seeking information about their ancestry. . . The local historian's duties are defined in relation to the history of the political subdivision, in this case a town, and there is no authority to conduct research with respect to biographical or genealogical matters which are unrelated to the town's history."

Please always be courteous and remember that local historians are doing you a favor in helping you further in your quest, even if it is only to point you in the right direction for potential sources of information which you seek! It is not part of their job to do genealogical research on your behalf.
