OBIT "-Headlight", Thayer Kans. Friday Nov 1, 1889

Only the day before the beloved pastor of the Presbyterian church had been out riding. Now his body lay in the embrace of Death. The evening before going about as usual and at ten minutes past four Saturday morning, dissolution took place and he was gone forever. At home, in the midst of peace and quiet of his little family and many friends he passed away so gently and so easilly that no one could surely say, I saw him die. Young Dr. Sims was staying with him and had temporarily left the room. Mrs. Robertson, his faithful wife was close by. Little "Clem" was there but too young to know of the death of his father. Soon the sorrowful tidings spread over the village as with bated breath one told another. "Mr. Robertson is dead!" Friends gathered quickly and all that human hands could do or affectionate sympathy suggest was offered freely to the bereaved family. Mrs. Robertson bore it all bravely, though suffereing with a severe headache. Mrs. George T. Dodds remained constantly at her side from five o'clock Saturday mornign until the train bearing the body and the family left Monday at 11:20 AM. John Taylor, Mrs Robertson's brother had started to come to surprise his sister and did not know of his brother's death until Mr. Reed told him near Chanute. He is a very kind brother and seemed to be a great comfort to his sister. Mr. Reed of the Presbyterian church of Chanute, came down and officiated at the services at the house and acccompanied the funeral party as far as Chanute.

Daniel James Robertson was born in Stratford, NY the 10th Day of March, 1850. graduated at Union College in 1876, and at Princeton Theological Seminary in 1879; called to the pastorate of the Presbyterian Church at Canisteo, NY, the home of his wife's parents in August 1879. When his heatlh failed in 1884 came to Kansas in October of that year, living for a while in the western part of the state and coming to Thayer in June 1885. He never seemed to have any strength but he not only preached in Thayer but also at the "Harrison" church about five miles west of Thayer. We have seen him quite frequently going off to "Harrison" when the weather was very uncomfortable but with indomitable energy and determination he seemed always ready to sacrifice himself for the good of others. He had many friends in Thayer who mourn his loss.

OBIT-Canisteo Times-31 Oct 1889

"The sad news of the death of Rev. D. J. Robertson, reached this place last Saturday morning. Mr. Robertson left Canisteo nearly five years ago for the west in hopes of regaining his failing health and took a pastorate charge at Thayer, Kansas, where he died.

He seemed to improve for a short time but this did not prove to be lasting and for the past year he has been failing quite rapidly.

Mr. Robertson is the son-in-law of W. B Taylor of this place, having married Miss Mary Taylor by whom one son was born.

He was once the pastor of the Presbyterian church of this place, it being his first charge after coming from the seminary, and is well and favorably known here, and his death casts a sad gloom over the entire community.

He was 36 years of age. His remains will be brought to this place for interment, and the funeral held at the Presbyterian church, Thursday at 3:PM.
