Descendants of Johannes Swartout
The following was submitted by Kathy
Hoeldke. The Swartout family is trying to compile enough material and
combine efforts to write a history on this family. It is still unknown
where many of the family settled. Samuel stayed in Oppenheim, and
Abraham and Thomas landed in Canada, but where did everyone else go?!?
Where are the parents buried? If you have any contributions to make or are connected
to the family, Kathy would like to hear from you.

Primary Proof: . From the Norwich Gazette Newspaper obituary Friday March 10, 1906.
The death occurred on Friday March 3, 1906 of John Gilbert, one of the oldest and best known of the farmers of North Norwich Township his home on the 6th concession. Mr. Gilbert was a son of Josiah Gilbert, a United Empire Loyalist, who served seven years in the American Revolution. When the war was over, not being able to reconcile himself to living under other than British
rule, he came to Canada. In the year 1808, he came to Oxford County, where he took up land and now known later as the Anstice Farm at Springford, and it was there that John Gilbert was born nearly 90 years ago. Mr. Gilbert attended school in the first schoolhouse built in the settlement, which was situated on the 7th concession of South Norwich. The building was very primitive and in reviewing his past experiences, Mr. Gilbert sometimes described it. It was built of logs and, as glass was an almost unknown luxury in the sparsely settled districts of Ontario at the time, sheets of glazed paper were utilized for windows. Mr. Gilbert served in the rebellion of 1837/38 and had in his possession a musket he carried at the time.
