Fulton County's Funeral Homes

    Funeral Homes became popular in the late nineteenth century after state laws were passed requiring the services of a mortician before a burial.  Many funeral directors keep additional information, more than what may be  listed on a death certificate, including next of kin, biography data, etc.  Mortuary records are the private property of the mortician, who usually retains them.  When a business is sold to another mortician, the records may or may not follow.  If the mortician goes out of business, records may be destroyed.  The American Blue Book of Funeral Directors lists names and addresses of morticians where your ancestors could have died.   Funeral directors usually have a copy of this reference.  It is helpful - if your ancestor died in one area and was buried in another, more than one mortician may have been involved and both would have records.
