Baptism Records as Recorded
By Rev. James Dempster
1778-1803

The following records were written by Robert M. Hartley, (St. Johnsville, N.Y.:  Enterprise and News) in 1935. They were donated from Peggy Menear's collection and transcribed by her as well. Peggy is researching her Chatterton line from the Mohawk Valley.  If you have any connection to or information about the Chatterton's, she would love to hear from you.

This is a joint effort project for Fulton, Herkimer/Montgomery and Saratoga Counties.

The places of residence named were the pioneer designations and were not, for the most part, villages or towns. "Bush" in the early frontier days signified the wilderness or forest. The designation "bush", "borough", etc, commonly was given or added to the names of the owners or leasees of the patents, grants or sections. Thus the 14,000 acres of Sir Peter Warren's estate, comprising the central section of the present town of Florida, was generally known throughout the Providence of New York as Warrenbush, Warrensburgh, Warren's County or Warrens.

Baltown, Balton = Probably present Ballston township, Saratoga County.
Caughuawaga = Territory in and about the present village of Fonda.
Charlestown = Included present towns of Charlestown and Glen.
Claverack = Located on the Hudson River below Albany.
Connajohary = Included the present village of Canjoharie and that territory west of Fall Hill later known as Canahoharie district.
Corrysbush = The name commonly given to the Corry-Clark Patent of 25,400 acres, located in the towns of Glen, Charlestown and Root.
Cshenectady or Dorp or Colliers = Early names for the present city of Schenectady.
Duanesburg = Was written and spelled in various ways: Duanesbush, Dewainsborough, etc. Now a township in southwest Schenectady County, named after James Duane, who owned a large tract of land in this section.
Fort Hunter = Present hamlet of Fort Hunter which has been a settlement since 1711.
Half Moon = In Saratoga County, north of Waterford.
Harweek's Patent = Probably section around Hartwick, Otsego County.
Indian Castle = Probably Indian Castle, Herkimer County, or may have been Indian Castle at the mouth of the Schoharie opposite Fort Hunter.
Irish Bush or Irish Settlement = Located in present town of Glen in the vicinity of the Harvey Shelp farm and was a settlement of sixteen Irish families brought over to this country by Sir William Johnson.
Jersey Bush = A section in the southwest corner of the town of Galway, Saratoga County, a part of which is still known as "Jersey Hill".
Kingsborough = Part of the present city of Gloversville.
Little Nose = The highlands south of the Mohawk in the town of Root.
Marlattsbush = Located along the Schoharie Creek in the present town of Glen, south of Jan Mabee's Patent.
Mohawk Town = Evidently meant for Mohawk district, which at this date comprised the towns of Florida, Glen, Charleston and part of Root.
New Broadalbin = The vicinity now comprising the townships of Perth and Broadalbin, Fulton County. Newton = In Cherry Valley section, Otsego County.
Old Fort = The vicinity of old Fort Hunter.
Remsen's Bush = Also variously called Remsenborugh, Ramsonburgh, etc. A 4000 acre tract in the eastern section of Florida, owned by the Remsen and Brinkerhoff families of Albany, New York and Long Island.
Saratoga = As mentioned in this record is evidently old Saratoga or the present village of Schuylerville.
Schaghtecough, etc. = Present Schaghticoke. The western section of northwest Washington County.
Shallot's Bush = Often written Charlottsbush, Chalzborough, etc. This was located in the south east part of the town of Florida, owned by Samuel Shallott, an early settler.
Warrensborough = A hamlet or small settlement of this name is indicated on an early map of Warrensbush, as being located along the South Chuctanunda Creek, about two miles from the Mohawk River. Traces of foundations of buildings, the site of an old mill pond and dam, are located on the old Barlow and present Hartley farms.
